Keldek's Unknown Strain (bagweed) Journal - June 2010

The following post will serve as a semi live documentary of my first grow attempt. I will try to update daily, or at least when I make progress (or fail).

My seeds: I have no idea yet as to the strain. I'm hoping to gain some more info as they grow, but as of now all I know is they're seeds from a pretty good bag I got a few weeks ago.

I wanted to go this route first before finding seeds online, and since the product I found was pretty good I figured I'll probably like the end product once I harvest. I kind of prefer this method to some strain online that I know nothing about ><

Anyway, moving on...

I started out using the wet paper towel method to germinate my seeds.

Roughly 48 hours later I transferred my seeds to soil. I tried both direct to a pot as well as in plastic cups. For some reason, the ones I planted in the pot have yet to grow, and I'm pretty sure they never will.

What I think happened is the soil might have been too loose and when I watered, the seeds sunk down too deep. I was able to 'rescue' one plant that looked like it was trying to sprout from about half an inch under the soil. When I planted the seeds, I made sure to put them as close to the surface as possible, so not sure what happened from there.

Anyhow, more on that later...

Roughly 48 hours after potting, 2 of my plants, Fen and Cas, broke the surface of the soil and have been growing quite nicely.

Here's some photos of them breaking the surface:

Some photos of Fen & Cas ~16 hours after breaking the surface:

I noted above about my failure when using the pot to plant my seedlings. While most of the seeds have died, I was able to find and 'rescue' one of them. When I discovered the petals, they were roughly half an inch below surface and seemingly trying to sprout. The stem was about an inch long before reaching the rot base, so from the time I planted it til the time I found it, it was nearly 1.5 inches below the soil.

Upon extracting it from the pot and transplanting it to the cup, I noticed it was completely yellow, on the verge of turning brown. Once I moved it to the cup and put it under the light, it started showing life 3-4 hours later. I have full confidence that she will continue to grow, but am keeping a very close eye on her.

As you can see in the photo below, Qed still shows some discoloration but is steadily improving.

Other details:
I'm using a compost-soil-perlite-coconut dust mixture for my growing. Not sure of the exact properties though, and it was pretty much the only thing I could find here. Most garden places only sold regular dirt with rice shells mixed in.

Currently using 2 8w 6400k fluorescent tubes, but this is temporary until my LED panels arrive next week.

Using ~16oz plastic cups for initial growing as I find it easier to monitor them this way.

Currently growing in my spare closet, plenty of humidity very little heat. Even less heat once LED panels arrive. I open the door for 20 minutes every other hour for ventilation.

Watering once a day, about half a fluid ounce every morning. Soil holds moisture well, and the humidity makes it even better.

Final thought: I think I'm progressing pretty good for a first time grower. I don't have access to a lot of the different things I've read about on these boards, so trying to make due with what I have. I could order stuff online, but ironically enough my house is apparently impossible to find even though I'm a 5 minute walk from the nearest main road; so I'm not entirely confident that anything i order online will ever actually get to me...

At any rate, we'll see how it goes over the next few days. I'm trying to keep my newbie mistakes to a min (over watering, constantly checking them, etc), and am now finally thankful for paying attention when my Uncle was teaching me how to grow crops many moons ago.

Oh, I did have one question... would I be hurting or helping the grow process if I were to set my plants outside in the morning so they can get some natural sun? I have some decent privacy on my 2nd floor terrace and can get roughly 5 hours of direct sunlight a day. Only thing I'm worried about is the heat mainly...

All in all, things are going better than I initially expected to, so wish me luck :)

I'm really glad there is another out there like me. I spent like 130 total and i'm using led panels too. Probly the same ones lol. I'm using the bubble bucket system instead of soil though. It will be interesting to compare
