I believe the general consensus nowadays is flushing is unnecessary, and robbing your plant of nutes when they need them the most. I personally feed until the very end. As for when to chop, I would invest in a jewelers loop, 30x or something like that and look for cloudy and amber triochromes...

I leave the bottom right flap mostly open, then have my exhaust going out the top left. The thought process is that the air is sweeping bottom to top, and from one side to the other. Dunno if one way is better than another, but it makes sense to me :P
