17 Groups Submit Marijuana Applications In Maine

Maine officials have received applications from 17 groups hoping to open nonprofit medical marijuana dispensaries.

Some of the gropus submitted multiple applications in the hope of operating more than one dispensary. The Portland Press Herald reported Saturdya that 29 applications have been received.

Maine voters in November approved a statewide referendum that expands the state's medical marijuana law. It allows retail dispensaries where patients can legally buy pot with a doctor's prescription.

The licensing division of the Department of Health and Human Services plans to award the licenses for the state's first eight dispensaries on July 9.
