Vermont's new marijuana decriminalization law is being put to use by the state's law enforcement community.

Since the law took effect July 1, the Vermont Judicial Bureau has received paperwork for 29 tickets.

WCAX-TV reports officers have a month after issuing the ticket to file the paperwork so it's likely the number is higher.

The new law decriminalizes possession of up to one ounce of marijuana. Now people found with small amounts of marijuana are given a ticket similar to a traffic ticket.

The statistics show city police in Newport have issued four tickets, the most of any municipal police agency.

Vermont State Police troopers have issued 11 tickets and Vermont Fish and Wildlife game wardens have ticketed three people.
