Using marijuana to treat patients is inching closer toward legalization in Florida. But Dr. Daniel Kantor, President of the Florida Society of Neurology, says that's a bad idea.

Kantor told Action News, "We've had a problem with pill mills. How can we be sure we sure we won't have a problem with marijuana mills?"

But organizers for a web site called United for Care say they've had 30,000 people disagree in the past two weeks and sign their petition to make medical marijuana legal in the Sunshine State.

Ben Pollara, campaign manager for United for Care, told Action News, "The legislature refuses to act in any way shape or form on it. So we are taking it to the people."

The petitioners, funded by prominent Florida attorney John Morgan are hoping to make the issue a statewide ballot measure next year by getting at least 700,000 signatures certified by the Capitol.

A similar petition failed in 2009. Unlike that one, the new petition actually prohibits patients from growing their own marijuana plants at home.
