I tend to stretch mine out and do a little at a time.

I defoliate the crap out of Auto's if they are a breed that gets crap loads of leaves. I also top and LST. Northern lights were/are the worst. They went 90 days and I had to defol twice a week.
The outer leaves don't bother with them they don't block anything.
Try and defol the center to let light in the core. Normally about 20 leaves a shot.
After defol destress with Superthrive at 1 drop a cup and throw in a tsp of Epsom salts. Spray the dog doo out of the plant to Foliar feed. Haven't had a Hermie yet but I stress yet. If you can't get superthrive get seaweed.
Avoid serious defol until a couple weeks into flower.
