Broadcaster Accused Of Promoting Cannabis

Online digital radio station Glastonbury Radio defended itself today for hosting a programme presented by Cannabis campaigner Free Rob Cannabis (name changed by deed-poll) after being attacked in a local discussion forum for allegedly "promoting Cannabis on air". Local resident Martin Wheeler who referred to Glastonbury Radio in his posting as "Hippyshit Radio" made the accusation after hearing the latest "Hemp Show presented by Free who owns and runs Hemp in Avalon, a busy shop in the town centre.

A response to the forum post by Mr Martin Wheeler of Glastonbury.

Free is a local businessman and supporter of Glastonbury Radio. He presents a show occasionally on the station and states his beliefs. Our policy as a station is for "free speech" and as such why shouldn't Free also be entitles to an opinion. We are not governed by the likes of Ofcom and are therefore able to be a little more free and open with our topics and subject matter on talk shows.

The government took what Free feels is a "backward step" this week be reclassifying Cannabis as a Class B drug, yet many know it has been very misrepresented over the years and has many alleged healing qualities. Many campaigners believe that whilst the Cannabis plant should NEVER be smoked as Free said on the programme, it has been proven to have many other qualities useful to sustainable living such as fuel, clothing and food.

Free has financially supported the station for two years by advertising his retail business on air and a such we see no reason why he should not put forward his beliefs within the confines of his radio programme. Free has served time in prison and been to court on numerous occasions for challenging the laws on Cannabis and said on the show "how can a plant that grows naturally be illegal?"

Glastonbury Radio has no objection to Free stating his opinion within his show even though that may not be the opinion of Glastonbury Broadcasting Ltd.

Only in the UK you say! Pity...(take off on an old Tea commercial in Canada). Is this the same UK that had a Queen Victoria who had marijuana given to her for menstral cramps by her doctor? I guess doctor prescribed medical marijuana is not such a new idea after all

My hats off to the fellow speaking his mind.
