Dublin – In the midst of a recent discussion about growing medical marijuana during an Alameda County Agricultural Advisory Committee meeting, one rancher wrangled in a few laughs.

The committee was debating a new ordinance that would define the cultivation of medical marijuana in unincorporated parts of Alameda County, amid a room of concerned farmers and ranchers clad in mud-splattered work boots, jeans and cowboy hats.

One such rancher spoke up during the public comment section of the meeting, concerned about his livestock and the potential marijuana cultivation near his farm.

"Do you know if there are any adverse effects if livestock get into the crop?" said the rancher with a black cowboy hat as the room erupted in laughter and giggles.

"They get high, Paul," responded another man.

"They get hungry too," said another.

Committee chair Larry Gosselin also responded that some marijuana crops have been used as part of livestock feed, but without the THC – the chemical in marijuana responsible for its psychological effects.
