COLORADO SPRINGS, United States : John Capel, the 200-meter world outdoor champion in 2003, has received a public warning from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) after testing positive for marijuana.

Capel tested positive for metabolites of cannabis or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a prohibited substance under the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) rules, at the Team Challenge Cup on August 8 in Munich.

In accordance with IAAF rules for a first offense, the 25-year-old American received a public warning. He also forfeited his second-place finish in the 100 meters at the Team Challenge Cup, a tuneup event for the Athens Olympics.

Capel, a member of the 2000 and 2004 US Olympic teams, faces a two-year ban for a second positive.

Capel, eighth in the 200m final at the Sydney Olympics after faltering at the start, played American football in 2001 and 2002 but was dropped by Chicago and Kansas City before returning to athletics and winning a world 200m crown.

After finishing fifth at 100m in the Olympic trials, Capel was in the 4x100m relay pool but was not among the five US runners who took silver in the event at Athens.
