Next weekend will see the Mile High City’s 420 pot festival and officials are preparing for travelers seeking the recreational marijuana in and around the Denver, Colorado area. The annual award ceremony takes place the weekend before April 20, which is the date that corresponds with the 420 code that pot users have used for a long time to promote a shared interest in the drug.

Last year, according to USA Today, the marijuana festival fell on Easter Sunday and Denver saw an influx of tens of thousands of people. Participants sampled snacks, listen to musicians who support marijuana, and openly consumed the drug, smoking it and eating edibles.

There has been an increase in online hotel bookings and searches for airline flights has seen an increase since they fell at the end of the ski season. A state report from 2014 indicated that approximately 90% of the marijuana sold for recreational use in the ski towns of Colorado was purchased by visitors.

However, many tourists coming to the state for the festival will be hit by the reality behind the legal recreational use of marijuana laws in Colorado. Many hotels do not allow any kind of pot smoking, and public consumption is not permitted. Trying to fly out of Colorado with marijuana bought in the state can cause all sorts of problems. Some tour companies have found a way to skirt the laws for marijuana visitors, one of which offers a limousine service that picks up travelers at Denver International Airport, will drive them directly to a recreational pot shop, and then allows the customers to smoke in the back of the limo on their way to their hotel.

The *edit* press release announced that for this years festival, Tommy Chong, of the comedy duo Cheech and Chong, is teaming up with Colorado Cannabis Tours for a promotional package for tours. The group will be offering various Tommy Chong tour packages ranging from $420 to $1740. The packages all include a smoke friendly autograph session meet and greet with Chong, a pass to the festival, Snoop Dogg concert tickets, and more. Chong will be the first celebrity featured on the 420 tour package.

While Denver and the rest of Colorado are prepping for a busy 420 festival weekend filled with pot seekers visiting the Mile High region, something different is happening in Boulder. On most of the recent April 20’s, *edit* the University of Colorado has closed the campus in Boulder, trying to stop any public smoking of marijuana on campus. However, this year the University has announced the Boulder campus will remain open to the public on Monday.

The University tried the end the 420 marijuana celebration in 2012, however, the lack of activity over the last few years led the University to make the decision to keep the campus in Boulder open this year. Since the pot holiday falls on Monday, the school is not anticipating a huge turnout on campus.

While Denver and the rest of Colorado continue preparations for the 420 marijuana festival, the food industry may also see a boom in pot seekers looking for snacks during the weekend’s activities. It is a sure bet that many convenience stores and fast food places are stocking up and expecting a rush on munchies throughout the weekend.
