Colorado Springs, CO--The Colorado Springs City Council unanimously approved licensing fees for medical marijuana businesses Tuesday.

"Are we ecstatic about paying a minimum of $3,600 in licensing fees?" asked Tanya Garduno, director of the Colorado Springs Medical Cannabis Council.

"No, but we'll work with it for now," she said.

The fees were almost identical to those proposed in June, when the council asked city staff to reevaluate the fees and get feedback from the medical marijuana industry. As a result, a few modifications were made, but most of the fees stayed the same.

Under the resolution approved by council, each applicant will pay a $2,200 application fee. The deadline to apply is Sept. 30.

"They can stay in business pending the outcome of the application," said Lee McRae, a license enforcement officer in the City Clerk's Office.

If the application is approved, business owners will have to pay for whatever licenses apply to their individual business or businesses. For example, the owner of a single medical marijuana dispensary will have to pay, at a minimum, $1,800 for a center license fee, plus $1,800 for an optional premises cultivation license fee.
