A ban on medical marijuana dispensaries has been approved by a Los Angeles City Council committee.

The Planning and Land Use Management Committee on Tuesday voted to end storefront pot shops and allow small groups of patients and caregivers to grow marijuana.

The Los Angeles Times (Pot shop ban advances in Los Angeles City Council - latimes.com) says Councilman Jose Huizar is trying to repeal the medical marijuana ordinance. Residents in his Eagle Rock district have complained about the proliferation of pot dispensaries.

Medical marijuana advocates say the ban would unfairly limit access to the drug for patients who rely on it.

They say the proposed three-person collectives would be hard on those who do not have the time or expertise to cultivate pot.

The proposal will be considered by the council's Public Saftey Committee, then the full council.
