Des Moines, Iowa - An Iowa lawmaker has signed on his support for a bill that would help provide better access to medical marijuana.

Congressman David Young is co-sponsoring the CARERS Act, which would reschedule cannabis from a Schedule 1 to a Schedule Two so that it could be researched.

The bill would also allow state-run medical marijuana programs to operate without federal interference.

Young released this statement on the decision:

"The federal government shouldn`t stand in the way of Iowa patients making informed decisions about treatment options with their doctors. I`m pleased this bipartisan, bicameral legislation addresses this issue, by prioritizing our patients and medical communities, empowering our researchers, and allowing state governments to determine the best policies for their own communities."

Currently. the Act is stalled in the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is led by Senator Chuck Grassley.

Supporters of the Act hope Young's endorsement will encourage Grassley to bring the bill up for a vote on the Senate floor.

Young previously served as Grassley's Chief of Staff.
