Young people in Delaware under the age of 18 would be legally allowed to use medical marijuana-based oils for certain medical conditions, under a bill approved unanimously by the State Senate.

As of now, no form of medical marijuana is legally available for anyone under age 18.

State Senator Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes, sponsored the bipartisan measure that would allow doctors to certify the use of cannabis oil to treat children with intractable epilepsy.

The bill is known as Rylie's Law, named after nine-year-old Rylie Maedler of Rehoboth.

She has suffered from seizures and other symptoms that have not gotten better with typical medications.

Lopez says 12 other states allow cannabis oil prescriptions.

The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.
