A new documentary on the benefits of medical cannabis to treat seizure disorders is being released this week in an effort to convince state lawmakers to pass legislation in January. Drew Alexander, an independent filmmaker from LaGrange, approached local families with children who suffer chronic seizures as well as Rep. Allen Peake (R-Macon), who sponsored legislation to legalize it.

"They approached us and said, 'Hey, we've bought into this struggle and we want to tell this story to people all over Georgia and over the country'," Peake tells WSB's Sandra Parrish. Among those featured in the documentary is Holly Springs Police Chief Ken Ball who hopes the legislation will pass during next session. "We're not supporting legalizing any drug; we're supporting legalizing a cannabis oil that stops seizures," he says.

The documentary, entitled Growing Hope also includes interviews with more than 30 families, several state lawmakers, including House Speaker David Ralston, and medical professionals. It will premiere Thursday at 6pm at the Dallas Theater in Paulding County. Peake is currently co-chair of a medical cannabis study committee of both House and Senate members that is looking to drafting another bill for lawmakers to consider.
