A new company striving to connect people looking for medical marijuana with doctors has set up shop in Sherbrooke, Que.
For a monthly fee, Dr. Cannabis will set up clients with a doctor who will prescribe them medical marijuana, if they meet the necessary criteria to qualify.
Not all doctors are willing to prescribe the drug, so Dr. Cannabis will work as an intermediary, working to find doctors who will prescribe it for patients who are looking to use it.
For $155, it will find a doctor for the patient within three to four months. If you're willing to pay $700, they'll work much faster, finding a doctor in just two weeks.
But Régis Gaudet, a representative of the company, warns that just because someone might want to access medicinal marijuana doesn't mean they're necessarily eligible. He said interest in the product was overwhelming while he was promoting his business at a local event.
"Lots of people were sick," he said. "Everyone who passed by our booth was sick, unfortunately, they weren't all diagnosable."
People must have a recognized condition, such as chronic pain or insomnia, and need to prove that traditional medical doesn't work in order to qualify for medicinal marijuana.
Not without warnings
Health Canada doesn't recognize that dried marijuana is safe and effective for medical use. On its website, it says most scientific studies to date focus on chemicals sourced from maijuana, not dried marijuana itself.
Dried marijuana has not been authorized as a therapeutic product in Canada.
"We're left to believe that it's a product with no side effects, that's safe and we can use it without problems," said Yves Robert, secretary of Quebec's College of Physicians.
"That's not the case. There are some warnings, notably for people who have mental health problems. And definitely, it's not recommended for people under 18 years old," he said.
Gaudet said he's told Sherbrooke police about the new business, and said it won't store marijuana in its office.
