The federal government is launching a task force to study the legalization and regulation marijuana use.

Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould says a task force has been struck.

It's comprised of experts in public health, substance abuse, law enforcement and justice.

"It is important for Canadians to remember however that while this process unfolds, the current criminal laws on marijuana remain enforced. Production and possession of marijuana are illegal unless it has been authorized for medical purposes."

Former Liberal public safety minister Anne McLellan will chair the task force.

BC Provincial Health Officer Dr.Perry Kendall will also help shape legislation to regulate cannabis.

Wilson-Raybould says she wants to keep marijuana out of the hands of children, and profits out of the pockets of criminals.

"It will re-balance legal treatment of marijuana to keep paces with the changes in our society while protecting health and safety."

The government will hold a online public consultations that will be open until the end of August.

The feds plan to table legislation next spring.
