Ferndale Delays Marijuana Clinics

Ferndale officials passed a 90-day maximum moratorium on allowing medical marijuana facilities to open, but Mayor Craig Covey said he expected the city would allow facilities in business districts eventually.

Covey dissented in the 4-1 vote last week.

"It's really not a moratorium. We truly just wanted a little time to make sure we're ready" for medical marijuana businesses that want to open, Covey said Thursday. "We certainly don't want businesses opening in our neighborhoods, but we aren't discouraging medical marijuana facilities."

The city joined several other communities around Detroit in passing a moratorium, including Berkley, Bloomfield Township, Royal Oak and West Bloomfield with 120-day moratoriums; and Clinton Township, Mt. Clemens and Pleasant Ridge with 180-day moratoriums. In addition, Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills have banned growing, selling or dispensing of medical marijuana; Huntington Woods restricts those activities to its commercial districts.
