Pittsburg city leaders were expected to take a final vote Tuesday night on whether medical marijuana dispensaries will be allowed within city limits.
The second reading of an ordinance that would ban medical pot dispensaries in the city was scheduled during that night's 7 p.m. City Council meeting.
The vote comes less than a month after the council gave initial approval to a staff recommendation to prohibit such businesses from setting up shop in Pittsburg.
City staff members say the ban would eliminate any potential conflict with federal law, under which all marijuana sales are illegal.
The City Council also believes medical marijuana dispensaries are "public nuisances" that result in violent crime and increased noise and foot traffic from non-residents and "out-of-area criminals," according to a city staff report.
City Council members in 2011 agreed to a moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries, but the moratorium is set to expire in April.
If given final approval tonight, the new ordinance will take effect in 30 days.
The move would follow similar bans approved recently in other Contra Costa County cities including Antioch and Concord.
More than 180 cities and 20 counties statewide have banned medical marijuana dispensaries, according to Kris Hermes of Americans for Safe Access, a national advocacy group for the safe and legal use of medical marijuana.
