SOQUEL - Sheriff's detectives found 1,000 marijuana plants growing in the labyrinth-like basement of a Soquel Hills house that caught fire Tuesday evening, authorities reported.

Deputies served a search warrant on the house, at 3595 Chardonnay Road, Wednesday afternoon, according to Sgt. Greg Lansdowne.

"They're trying to determine if it's a legitimate marijuana grow or not," he said.

The Sheriff's Office had yet to determine who was responsible for the marijuana plants. No one had been arrested, Lansdowne said Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Central Fire investigators on Wednesday determined the fire sparked near the rear of the multi-level house but ruled the cause unknown, Mike DeMars, spokesman for the Central Fire Protection District, said.

"There wasn't really any evidence to point at one direct cause," he said.

However, the marijuana grow was not to blame, according to DeMars.

The structure also was red-tagged by a county building inspector Wednesday, meaning it's uninhabitable, according to the fire department.

The 6 p.m. blaze caused massive damage to the home, which is a rental, but no one was hurt.

The woman renting the home was walking her dog when the fire broke out. A friend who was at her house taking a nap had smoked a cigarette on the deck but told firefighters he put the cigarette out before going to sleep.

Fire crews were at the scene until after midnight to make sure the fire was out. A fire investigator was back at the charred home Wednesday morning.
