Washington County, Fla. - Washington County is joining other counties across the state with passing an ordinance to temporarily stop the use of medical marijuana in the county.

On Monday, Washington County attorney Jeff Goodman presented a 240 day moratorium to the county commissioners in the form of Ordinance 7-1. The county's first ordinance of 2017.

Tuesday, Amendment Two is scheduled to go into effect, but many counties are "pressing pause" on the initiative to discuss issues with zoning and regulation. Amendment Two passed in the November general election by more than 70 percent of voters. County officials want to regulate the growing and dispensing of medical marijuana.

"The legislature's trying to figure it out as we go, but really from a homeroom stand point it's like any other commercial business," said Goodman, "Because you've got things that are zoned potentially industrial, commercial, agricultural, residential and so where does this dispensing aspect fit into that?"

"Most of the commissioners are leaving the first week of February to go down South to a conference. That's what the conference is going to be about - the medical marijuana issue," said Tray Hawkins, District 3 Commissioner of Washington County. County and city officials across the state are meeting in February to discuss ways to regulate medical marijuana for local municipalities.

Goodman says he's making plans to meet with people in different departments of the county like land and zoning, building department, and the planning commission to go over what works for the county.
