Washington County - Washington County's Board of Commissioners and local municipalities are joining a growing trend across Florida by considering taking action to impose a moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries and land used for cultivation.

Amendment 2 will go into effect on Jan. 3, allowing the drug to be prescribed to patients with "debilitating medical conditions," such as cancer and multiple sclerosis.

With the impending implementation of medical marijuana here, governments are sorting out how to regulate the dispensing and cultivation of the drug locally. Most are passing moratoriums while waiting for guidance from the state.

Chipley City Council members voted to support a year-long moratorium, directing City Attorney Michelle Jordan to draft an ordinance to present at a public meeting which will be announced at a later date. Jordan also serves as attorney for the City of Vernon and states she will make a similar recommendation to Vernon.

Jordan explained the moratoriums are not intended to go against the Amendment, but rather to give governments time to gather public input and develop a plan to regulate dispensaries and cultivation in a way that is in compliance with state law.

The Washington County Board of County Commissioners also expressed intentions of implementing a moratorium when the board met on Wednesday. Commissioners scheduled a public hearing to address the measure for 9 a.m. on January 2.
