CO - Steve Ackerman is no stranger to opening up a business in fort collins. He nis a former night club owner in Fort Collins. But Steve has moved on from the business of booze to the business of medicine. Medical Marijuana.
Steve and his family have recently opened Organic Alternatives in Old Town Fort Collins. He is one of about 109 MMD's in Fort Collins to do so since the mad rush was on to open these clinics. Steve says he realized the opportunity was there for patients who use medical marijuana, after he heard news that came straight from Washington.
Attorney General Eric Holder would not prosecute local dispensaries.
Throughout the region there are all types of clinics set up including home businesses. Steve said he wanted to make his location more upscale, investing heavily in remodeling the space he's in now.
But like in all business there is risk, and with legislation at the state working to determine the fate of these dispensaries and how they should be regulated or even able to operate at all that risk is high. Steve's investment could be all for not, but he says he doesn't see it that way.
Uderstanding standing the benefits of medical marijuana is one of Steve's strong points in what he believes, will make his clinic succesfull and not some fly by night pot shop. Steve knows first hand what the benefits of medical marijuana are after breeaking his back in a car accident in 1973. He began using marijuana medically as a pain reliever,and says this is a much better way to get medicine than the way he had to get it before. On the black market.
Steve believes dispensaries now eliminate the criminal side of marijuana.
All in all Steve says he serves roughly 200 to 300 patients in Fort Collins alone, so the demand is there, and says he believes demand will continue for a long time to come.
