Framingham Medical Marijuana Clinic Changes Location

A California company says it is opening a medical marijuana clinic in a new, undisclosed location in Framingham on Jan. 5 and dropping plans to open offices in Newton and Needham.

CannaMed planned to open an office in a professional building on Concord Street, but the landlord terminated the lease over concerns neighbors raised about the business, regional manager Richard Tav said.

Tav said the company has signed a lease for a new location in town, is booking appointments with patients and will quietly tell them where to go.

The company will announce the whereabouts of the office when it holds a grand opening on Jan. 5, Tav said.

Plans CannaMed had to add offices in Newton and Needham are "off the table," he said.

"I think it's going to be a tough haul just for the one," he said.

The plans for the clinic come after Massachusetts voters legalized medical marijuana in November.

CannaMed says patients will bring in their medical records and receive a full physical, then, if they qualify, receive a "recommendation" for marijuana to take to a dispensary.

Up to 35 medical pot shops can be permitted in the state next year, under the law voters passed, with between one and five in each county.

For its part, patients pay CannaMed a $199 yearly fee, which includes a required follow-up visit within one year.

Framingham and other communities are awaiting more information from the Department of Public Health on the legalization of medical marijuana.
