Greece joins a growing number of countries that are embracing medical cannabis reform.

The Greek Health Ministry has announced the formation of a group of academics, doctors, scientists, legal advisors, politicians and patient associations that are working together to discuss a framework for legalizing medical cannabis nationwide, according to the Greek Reporter.

The group will assess the medical uses of cannabis, as well as how to best regulate a system wherein patients can legally access marijuana for medical purposes.

Their advisory findings will be submitted to the health minister Panagiotis Kouroumblis by Oct. 30, 2016.

The announcement comes about one month after 36 members of the Greek left-wing political party SYRIZA submitted a request to the health minister to legalize medical cannabis, titled "National plan for medicinal cannabis."

The MPs offered data from other European countries that have legalized medical cannabis, including Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Italy.

They also emphasized the potential economic benefits medical marijuana and industrial hemp legalization could bring to the country, which has been battling a massive debt crisis since 2010.

"The financial benefits of cultivation of our own cannabis in Greece for medicinal/pharmaceutical purposes and for use in research would be multi-faceted (rejuvenating our agricultural economy and processing, resumption of export of hemp products after many years of stagnation, strengthening insurance funds to escape the burden of expensive prescription pharmaceutical products)," SYRIZA MPs wrote in the request.
