Mari's Garden in Central Oahu, which is one of the largest aquaponics farms in the United States, could be adding a medical marijuana growing operation to its mix, according to public documents.

ERBA Wellness, headed by an owner of Mari's Garden and its consultant, who have applied with the state Department of Health to become one of three medical marijuana dispensaries on Oahu, plan to grow their products at the Mililani farm, according to a recent presentation by the group at the Mililani/Waipio/Melemanu Neighborhood Board.

Currently, 23 states have legalized medical marijuana and most of the products are grown indoors with a high carbon footprint, according to the presentation, which noted that it's estimated that the U.S. electricity use for marijuana production is equivalent to an average of two million homes.

Hawaii legalized medical marijuana use in 2000 and there are currently 13,833 patients using medical marijuana, but patients were limited to cultivation at their home and through caregivers.

But through the recent passage of Act 241, eight licenses will be doled out to groups and businesses that will handle the cultivation, dispensing and product manufacturing of medical marijuana.

The eight licenses will be awarded by April 15, with each licensee permitted to open two retail dispensaries and two production centers.

ERBA Wellness' CEO Ret. Adm. Mel Chiogioji has experience in government project and program management and has spent his career in healthcare and research.

Fred Lau, master cultivator, who also is part of ERBA Wellness, has nearly 40 years of experience in sustainable agriculture.

Others part of ERBA Wellness include Darwin and Tamar Wise, who will focus on innovations in cannabis oils and concentrates while emphasizing alternatives other than smoking; Suzanne Sisley and Claire Santos, the group's medical and health advisors; and Doug Aton, a retired assistant chief for the Honolulu Police Department, with Star Protection Agency providing security for the company.

Mari's Garden recently went off the electric grid through the use of an energy management system that utilizes solar energy and batteries from a system developed by Wisconsin-based EnSync Energy Systems.
