The Illinois Medical Marijuana Program is getting closer to having product available to patients, but still many doctors have questions surrounding the program.
Workers from Herbal Remedies LLC., the dispensary in Quincy, are hosting a forum at Blessing Hospital on Wednesday for the medical community to learn more about the medical marijuana program.
Blessing Cancer Center Director of Oncology Raymond Smith says some doctors are cautious because with other medicines there are typically clinical trials and details sent out to doctors, but because of how medical marijuana came about this wasn't done.
"So since it's never been done before, there are questions all over the place," Dr. Smith said. "How do you write the prescriptions, how do you get it to the patients, how do they get it at the pharmacy, what's the time lag going to be between the time you sign up and you get it?"
"So all of these things are still in the process of being worked out," Smith added.
Dr. Smith says communication between the dispensary and doctors will need to grow even more as the product comes out and patients are actually using the product.
Andy Schnack, manager at Herbal Remedies, says he recognizes the medical community still doesn't fully understand what the law means. He says some still feel they are prescribing the actual marijuana, but instead they are writing a recommendation.
"We're going to talk about the different responsibilities of the patient, the responsibilities of the physician and what their role is in this whole process," Schnack said. "As well as trying to urge those physicians almost treat their patients like a case study."
Schnack says some arguments are there isn't enough research. He says if there is a patient who qualifies and asks for the program, give them the recommendation and then track their progress to be used as information.
