Iowa House Rewrites Law To Remove Possibility Of Medical Marijuana

Marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug and only a Schedule I drug under legislation passed Monday by the Iowa House.

The illegal drug currently is classified in law as both a Schedule I drug — identifying it as highly addictive and without medical value — and as a Schedule II drug having an accepted medical value.

The dual classification injects uncertainty into state law on the drug and could allow the state pharmacy board to pass rules allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana for medicinal purposes. The bill, House File 168, removes that ambiguity and strips the board of its ability to allow medical marijuana.

The measure passed on a 71-24 vote, and now goes to the Senate for further consideration.
