Montego Bay, St James - At least two Government ministers are expected to be among speakers, including international and local cannabis experts, at the Cannabis Business Conference and Symposium to be hosted by CANEX, Jamaica at the Montego Bay Convention Centre on Friday, September 2.

According to Douglas Gordon, events director for CANEX, Jamaica, Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett and Minister of Transport and Mining Mike Henry have confirmed to participate in the conference, which will also include Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA) board member Delano Seivwright among the over 20 presenters.

Meanwhile, some of the international speakers will be Dr Yasmine Hurd, a Jamaican-born medic who works at Mount Sinai; former NFL player Lance Johnston; and Boaz Whachtel, a pioneer in the Israel cannabis industry.

The events director for CANEX outlined that the goal of next month's conference is to pull together local industry players and their international counterparts to create a platform for both "informational exchange and networking and business opportunities".

"We have been reaching out to a number of the different associations directly, to some of the industry players, some of the companies that already have footprint here in Jamaica and to individual investors, individual businesspeople who have an interest in the industry," Gordon argued.

"What we want to do is bring together different parts of the industry. We want to create an opportunity for the local stakeholders, foreign stakeholders to come together. We have over 20 different speakers and panellists who will speak to the medicinal benefits, the legal aspects of it and the opportunities within the industry."

He emphasised that another of the conference's goal is for the Jamaican population to have "a much greater sense of what this industry looks like outside.

"I think it has a real game-changing opportunity for the country in terms of jobs, in terms of tax revenue, in terms of GDP growth across a number of different aspects in the industry," Gordon remarked.
