John Tory Admits to Marijuana Use

Ontario Conservative Leader John Tory says "he's 30 years old and hopefully a lot wiser".

The opposition leader is admitting he smoked pot as a high school and university student. The revelations are in a column Tory wrote 30 years ago as a student for the Osgoode Hall Law School newspaper.

In the article, Tory said that he favoured decriminalization of pot and thought it was "absurd'' to throw marijuana traffickers in jail.

Tory told the Toronto Sun he hasn't used weed since those days, but he still believes it's unfair to give someone the stigma of a criminal record for simple possession. However, he now believes in tougher sentences for traffickers.

The party leader also talks about a time he and a friend barely evaded capture carrying a half pound of marijuana at a Lake Simcoe marina while being followed by a boat with a searchlight.

Tory isn't alone in his youthful experimentation. All three provincial leaders, including Premier Dalton McGuinty and N.D.P Leader Howard Hampton have admitted to experimenting with pot or hashish.
