A company planning to establish Western Australia's first industrial hemp farm is assessing the viability of setting up in Kununurra in the state's north.

Hemp Resources is planning to plant trial plots in both the great southern and Kimberley.

The company had previously indicated it was looking at a Broome block as the site of the Kimberley farm.

Hemp's chief executive, Kim Hough, says Kununurra may shape up to be a better option after local growers agreed to plant trials within the next fortnight.

"Kununurra has given us such a warm welcome and the potential to build a 200,000 tonne per annum hemp paper mill here is such that right at this point in time we're concentrating on what we can do here and whether we can adapt the seeds and a yield here."
