Law Enforcement And Medical Marijuana Laws

The medical marijuana dispensary in the capital city officially opened to the public on Thursday.

Local law enforcement tells us they are still learning how to enforce the law.

There are many restrictions on its use, even for those with cards, like the 25 people who signed up at HCI Alternatives Thursday.

You cannot smoke in public, you must purchase it from Illinois dispensaries, and it must be sealed in an air-tight container.

Springfield Police Lieutenant Chris Mueller says regardless of how much of the drug is in your system, an officer will give you a DUI if they determine it has impaired your driving.

"It's based on the officers observations, what they've seen you do, give them a field sobriety test and that's what the arrest is based on," says Lt. Mueller.

The CEO of HCI Alternatives, Chris Stone, tells us those who break the rules will have their medical card taken away. They may also face legal consequences.

Stone says he expects about 200 patients to sign up at the Springfield dispensary during the next couple months.
