The cabinet forwarded to Parliament a commission recommendation that the
use of marijuana in private or for medicinal or religious reasons be
legalized, Information Minister Colin Campbell said. The recommendation,
made in August 2001, said marijuana use should remain illegal for minors
and in public places, and that cultivation and exportation should remain
outlawed. Under current law, possession of one marijuana cigarette is
punishable by a small fine or up to 10 days in jail. A parliamentary
committee will decide whether the law should be changed. No timetable has
been set.
