Legalization Of Pot Could Bring In Billions For Taxes In B.C.

Since Washington has legalized the use of marijuana, many pro-legalization British Columbians are using the state's situation in an attempt to get the government to open their eyes to look at the positive numbers.

According to a new study conducted by researchers from the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University, the total amount of pot bought by British Columbians each year equals half a billion dollars, and the pro-legalization researchers believe this could generate massive tax revenues, The Canadian Press reported.

To be more specific, the researchers, who referred to data from Washington, suggest that if the state had more than 366,000 pot users —the number of British Columbians who use- they could bring in $2.5 billion in taxes over five years in a regulated system.

The study also quantified the retail value of the herb sold in the black market and found that the industry receives around $443 million to $564 million a year.

However, lead author Dan Werb believes that regulation will be tricky, but legalizing marijuana will control the price, and more importantly, who gets access to the product.

The researchers and authors of this study are part of the pro-pot Stop the Violence B.C. coalition, which works to get the government to change marijuana policies so that it can be taken away from violent criminal organizations, as well as working to reduce overall use.

What are your thoughts on legalizing marijuana? Will it be positive or negative for society? Write your thoughts below.

Controlling the price of THC basically, will be our initial approach, although this marketplace will not resemble that of liquor, not cookin it in the woods in large amounts, gettin drunk and then into a fight and wreckin the truck. Weed is another critter entirely.

I think that we are going to eventually realize that we have to surrender control over relatively harmless human behavior. But none of us are going to be able to wrestle down, for quick results, this plant, this vault of wonderful science, that we are witnessing as we welcome cannabis back into our world, and into our ancient cannabinoid receptors. We are hard wired for cannabis, with receptors in the immune system throughout our bodies, very old ones in our genetic histories.

The terpenes that give cannabis fragrances and that are concentrated in the buds, they exist in some world that we are compelled to explore. Some of them are demonstrably anti-inflammatory (eucalyptus), for example, or sedative (myrcene).

My point is that there is more to Cannabis than thc. Go ahead and sell the strong stuff, just think bigger about it. With the author's talk of taxation, how about some scientific funding with those tax revenues? Cannabis seems to want us to know about it. Let's find out what's in there.

Big difference between a private citizen feeling good in good health, and a legal drug company selling product. They don't want you to feel good, believe me. They are corporations who must by law, increase profits quarterly.
corporations have a :green_heart:

Oh, BTW: y'all didn't think that your elected politician$ worked on your behalf, did you?

Anything legislators in British Columbia can do to foster a legal system of control over the Cannabis cultivation that currently exists in British Columbia CANADA will help assuage and alleviate concerns from Ottawa that Cannabis is bad for Canadian overall fiscal health.

The provinces must take the lead in a federal system, as the states have taken the lead below the parallel in past Federalist america.

Why would the Canadian people allow their most vocal proponent of Cannabis legalization to languish in an American jail ?

There are political cross-currents in Canada that cut across provincial boundaries.

If uncovered empirically, as has been the case in the lower 48, then Mr Harper's conservatives can be given the heave-ho !

Why spend billions of Canadian dollars chasing a plant, when 'rocks n stocks' hold the greatest bounty for Canadian citizens?
