Locations Proposed for Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

Nearly 30 applicants, two of them in Portland, are hoping to operate medical marijuana dispensaries in the state. On Friday, the state will choose eight locations in Maine.

The city of Portland says it's heard from at least two different organizations looking to open a dispensary in the city.

Northeast Patients Group says if its application is approved, it would like to open up at the former Key Bank at the intersection of Congress and St. John's Streets. The organization says this spot is central to public transportation and is already set up as a secure facility, saying it's possible it could store the medical marijuana in the bank's old vault.

Another group, Southern Maine Medicinal Clinic, is looking at 135 Walton Street. An attorney for the group says this spot would just house the grow operation and patients will get their medicine somewhere else downtown.

For those who live and work in the area, there is both support and concern about the proposals.

The state will choose the dispensary locations on Friday.
