From the outside it looked like any other warehouse.

But, on the inside, it had modern designs, dozens of people and lots of marijuana.

Theory Wellness, the state's 12th medical marijuana dispensary, had its grand opening on Thursday at their Bridgewater location, 1050 Elm St.

"It's really been going well so far," Brandon Pollock, the CEO of Theory Wellness said. "We have had a lot of patients so far — probably at least 50 people."

The company approached Bridgewater Town Council a year and a half ago. After gaining state approval, and 10 months of construction, the company opened Bridgewater's first dispensary and growing facility.

"This is a very unique opportunity to help better lives and also create a business organization that can provide good paying jobs," Pollock said.

The facility, which includes state-of-the-art independently climate-controlled cultivation rooms, drying and processing areas, was designed from the ground up.

"Usually facilities are placed in old warehouses," Pollock said. "We got to design our own building."

On the outside is a plain, 12,000-square-feet metal facility with security cameras capturing every angle of the property.

When patients enter they must show their medical marijuana card and a valid ID.

Inside the dispensary is a modern room with wood floors, couches, music and vine covered walls.

"We want this to be a comfortable and casual place," Pollock said. "Some people who come here may be going through a hard time and we want this to be a positive environment"

Past the entrance are menus, but it's not sandwiches, salads or coffee listed on them.

Instead it consists of various strains and forms of medical cannabis — pre-rolled joints, chews, salve, flower, capsules, extract, cartridges, sap and tinctures.

"The benefits vary. Some of these are best to help with sleep, anxiety or pain," Pollack said. "It's unique because there is no type of average patient. Everyone that walks in is different."

Pollock said chronic pain is the number one reason people come in to buy medical cannabis.

"It ranges, what we do here," Pollock said about his staff of 40 people. "What people need to know is we treat peoples' symptoms, we don't cure illnesses."

"One big thing we want to try to educate the community on is marijuana is not a gateway drug," Pollock said. "It is a drug to allow you to come off of medicine."

Pollock said he himself uses medical marijuana for anxiety and sleep.

Attached to the dispensary is the cultivation facility, which they began growing marijuana in February.

"We (produce) everything in really small batches," Pollock said. "It allows us to pay attention to more detail."
Along with Theory Wellness, Alternative Compassion Services Inc., is in the process of building a medical marijuana cultivation center in Bridgewater.

It is less than a mile away from the Theory Wellness building and also on Elm Street.

As for recreational marijuana, Pollock said it is still up in the air what the company will do.

In November, Massachusetts voters approved Question 4 of legalizing recreational marijuana.

Bridgewater voted against the measure by a slim margin, with 51 percent of voters against the question.

"It's hard to tell what we will do," Pollock said when asked if Theory Wellness would soon sell recreational marijuana. "The laws are changing and we would have to talk to the town."

"Right now our focus is on quality," Pollock said. "Here we give people the opportunity to treat their pain with natural substances."
