Taunton City Council To Hear From Medical Marijuana Consultant

A "medical cannabis business consultant" wants to meet with officials to discuss the possibility of opening a medical marijuana dispensary within city limits.

The request is included in a letter addressed to the City Council from Mickey Martin, consulting director for T-Comp Consulting.

T-Comp bills itself as "the industry's leading medical marijuana consultant."

In the letter, Martin says he also represents Uplifting Health and Wellness, an organization of budding medical marijuana entrepreneurs vying to open legal pot clinics in the Bay State.

Voters in Massachusetts last November approved a law allowing as many as 35 non-profit dispensaries in the state.

Taunton City Council in February discussed whether it would make sense to restrict legal pot clinics to industrial zones.

City Planner Kevin Scanlon that night referred to previous comments by Police Chief Edward Walsh, as well as studies conducted in California, indicating that crime decreases in areas where marijuana clinics are established.

The council referred the matter to its Committee on Ordinances and Enrolled Bills.

Martin's letter describes his client as "well-funded and extremely knowledgeable about medical marijuana and what it takes to run a successful non-profit organization" whose focus is "public safety and community benefits."

Martin also notes to the council that he is submitting a collection of plans outlining how such a facility would be staffed and run.

At one point in the letter he asks that those materials be made available only to city officials and police. He also is providing councilors a copy of his book entitled "Medical Marijuana 101."
