Maine Medical Marijuana User Files Lawsuit

The American Civil Liberties Union of Maine and the McKee Law firm are suing a staffing firm they say refused to hire a woman because she legally uses medical marijuana.

ACLU Maine said the lawsuit against Adecco Group North America seeks back wages and reinstatement for Brittany Thomas, of Pittsfield.

Thomas said she previously worked through Adecco at a plant assembling smoke detectors.

When more work became available, she told Adecco she would fail a drug screening test because she used medical marijuana to relieve severe back pain. When she failed the test, she was told she could no longer work for Adecco.

Thomas said medical marijuana wouldn't have detracted from her job because she would never use it while on duty.

An Adecco spokesman wasn't immediately available for comment.
