A Rocky Mount prison guard was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with hauling almost $15,000 worth of marijuana in his vehicle, authorities said.

Thomas Floyd Groome II, 51, of the 600 block of Airport Road was arrested shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday during a traffic stop near mile marker 148 on Interstate 95, said Lt. Pat Joyner of the Nash County Sheriff's Department.

Groome is a sergeant with the N.C. Department of Corrections, working at Fountain Correctional Center for Women in Rocky Mount.

"He currently still is employed with the Department of Corrections, but the matter is under investigation," Fountain Superintendent Jimmy Horton said Wednesday.

Nash County deputies stopped Groome's vehicle and discovered six pounds of marijuana in the car, Joyner said. He declined to say what led deputies to stop Groome's car.

In addition to the drugs, deputies also confiscated $889 in cash.

Groome was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of selling and delivering marijuana and of felony possession of marijuana. Groome, who started working at Fountain in February 2001, was jailed under a $12,000 bond.

With Groome's arrest, deputies now are trying to determine the destination of the marijuana, but neither Horton nor Joyner would speculate on where the drugs were destined.

Groome's first appearance is set for today in District Court in Nashville.
