Marijuana Flavoured Candy Banned

A new law in the US state of Georgia makes it illegal to sell sweets and other products made to taste like marijuana to minors, in what may be the first such ban in the country. Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue signed a law today banning the sale of "marijuana flavoured products" to minors. It slaps violators with a misdemeanor and imposes a fine of up to $US500 ($A526) for each offence.

The law, which takes effect on July 1, targets businesses that sell sweets with drug-inspired names such as Kronic Kandy and Pot Suckers. Those, the measure says, give children the "false impression that marijuana is fun and safe," and can serve as a gateway to the use of marijuana and other drugs.

"The sale of marijuana-flavored products, including lollipops and gum drops, which claim 'every lick is like taking a hit' is a marketing ploy that perpetuates an unhealthy culture and should not be permitted in the state of Georgia," the law reads. Marketers argue that the pot-flavoured sweets are a harmless novelty and say they advise retailers to sell the products only to customers 18 or older. The sweets are generally flavoured with hemp essential oil, a legal product that gives them the taste of marijuana but doesn't make the user intoxicated.

Vote Hemp, a national organisation that promotes the use of hemp products and tracks legislation, says the law makes Georgia the first state to ban the sale of the sweets to minors.

"give children the "false impression that marijuana is fun and safe,"
At least the kids can still get Harry Potter Booger and Vomit flavored jelly beans. Now that is fun and safe! We live in a screwed up world.
