Marijuana User Questions New Illinois Law

She has struggled with the symptoms of multiple sclerosis for 27 years but it wasn't until 2004 that Julie Falco found a drug that finally provided predictable relief. Marijuana, or as Falco prefers to call it, cannabinoid medicine, which she bakes into brownies and takes in doses of one inch-cubes, three times per day, helps her insomnia, quells the numbness and tingling and the otherwise unrelenting spasms in her muscles and legs.

"Above all, it helped with the depression," said Falco, 48, of Chicago. "I didn't want to commit suicide anymore." Falco is impatient for a future in which she won't have to tip-toe around to buy the plant that has largely replaced the array of pharmaceuticals she used to take. The state's new medical marijuana law went into effect Jan. 1, but Falco and an untold number of other marijuana self-prescribers will remain at risk of arrest until state agencies establish a system of regulated cultivation and distribution by April.

The drug will only be made available to the seriously ill who must document their maladies and place their names on a registry created by the state Department of Public Health. "We hope state officials will work swiftly to ensure seriously ill patients no longer face legal penalties for using medical marijuana," said Chris Lindsey, a legislative analyst for the Marijuana Policy Project. "Illinois patients and their families have already waited long enough." Falco worries about the potential intrusiveness of the new law, the strictest in the nation, which requires three state agencies to establish rules for patient ID cards.

"The state is putting a lot of pressure on patients to go through the process," Falco said. "There's talk we will have to be fingerprinted, go through background checks. The state will have access to our medical records. "I have a lot of questions," said Falco, "including 'Gosh, am I still a criminal?' I was on OxyContin and Vicodin and I didn't have to get fingerprinted." Other concerns include how prices will be set for medical marijuana − "We're trying to keep it low cost or no cost for patients," Falco said − and whether dispensaries will be located in safe, easy-to-access areas.

In Lake County, numerous towns are mulling zoning laws for possible petitions for dispensaries and cultivation sites. Some have joined a county-wide task force on the subject. State Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, who voted for the law under a four-year pilot program, said that users "must still be aware that they can't procure legally." "Technically it's still considered a federal offense, but because states are moving to decriminalize (cannabis) or provide it for medicinal purposes, the federal government is kind of in a quagmire," Yingling said. "I wouldn't be surprised if eventually the U.S. Supreme Court makes a decision on the basis of state's rights vs. federal law."

... I understand that some gains in this med. field is a good sign, but it is ridiculous at least and inhumane at worst, to say one must be "seriously ill" before one is entitled to nature's bounty as God created! ... and we feel it's ok to be forced to grovel & beg as long as children are barred from rehabbing unless they almost die first - "let us try to poison your children first, THEN try last-chance, unproven blah blah". It is criminal; it is evil! Legalization is Capitulation!

When one learns the historical fact that the FIRST ban (law) against hemp was in Swaziland, in 1922, as an act of protectionism to support the cotton plantations of Egypt, one can see the true, evil purposes of colonialism/capitalism. The ban on hemp was next introduced to Kanada in 1923, more than a decade sooner than in the USA!

Repeal of all restrictions against hemp agriculture OF ALL TYPES must be initiated.

The truth of the matter is simple: allowing production of medicinal, industrial, commercial and recreational hemp products will destroy large swaths of most of capitalism's favoured phony industries, starting with: big Oil, big Pharma, the AMA/CMA, big Agri, Monsanto, etc. Forestry, Construction, Clothing and many other industries would be affected as well -
that is the true reason that the lies were started about hemp after WW I and the real reason that perpetuating these controls, or legislating "regulations to control ... for ... protection...
...society ... child ... taxes .." is simply another set of LIES that will crumble in the floodlights of Truth that will, one day, catch all of "Society" in it's glare!

I doubt that ANY politician of any stripe (the only ones I've seen are yellow) will endorse this Truth! No politician would be permitted to discuss such a "ludicrous" concept - also, each and every politician who might be paying attention to reality knows we must keep our prisons full, train new criminals, keep the courts busy, generate more misery and continue to do the good work of the Big Banks!

Light Truth Love 70 yr. old ex-arthritis/COPD/liver/diabetic in my garden March/October for 20 more summers for sure!

You forgot Big Booze.

XOXO,

... ? ... yeah, well ... Who's "they" who must give up & surrender? If you are a Canuck, you know our citizens have surrendered already, making guns obsolete in this country (except for criminals who arm themselves at will!)

If the "THEY" to whom you refer are 'merkins, they DON"T have to give up all firearms! The state militias WILL see to that, rest assured!

... or, like Tennessee Ernie Ford, do you only believe what you read in the newspaper? lmao :thanks:

... nah, I didn't - It's simply that of all the evil constructs that exist in our Matrix, the booze industry is simply a toss-in, like gambling and sex, a little extra way to tap out more misery - not a MAJOR drain, like Pharma, or Food!

Peace out! Chill! Love Your Now! dave

Just telling you what the law they have written has in it at this time, it may or may not be in the final bill. But as a canuk you already let your government take your guns. the difference between a citizen and a subject is that a citizen is armed.

Ah, yes Dude - I halfway missed ur point, I think!

You tellin me that in ur bill for MedCanna there's a proposed rider that means if U wanna grow, u can't own a gun?

... and yeah, for sure, Kanada has taken freedoms away from it's people far more than sheeple can even imagine - EVERYone I meet in my country thinks ev'thing in Kanada is neato! lmao!

Peace, bro. Love & Light dave
