Prague- Several hundreds of young people met in the centre of Prague today to demonstrate for the legalisation of marijuana and even thousands joined the following march and the open air concert in support of marijuana. The protesters carried posters featuring a cannabis leaf and inscriptions like "Legalisation is needed" and "It smells nice." The typical smell of marijuana complemented the atmosphere of the protest event.

The march proceeded through Prague streets, with policemen halting the traffic and enabling the free passage of demonstrators where necessary.

Czech supporters of the legalisation of marijuana meet regularly in early May within the world event that was named Global Marijuana March this year. Today's meeting was the eleventh in Prague. David Cermak, member of the For Legal Cannabis civic association and the organiser of the protest, said he estimated the number of participants in the march at 4,000 at least.

He said the demonstration, including the concert, stands with refreshment and movable toilets for the participants, has been co-financed by sponsors, including the firms that make cosmetics and other products of cannabis. "Facts clearly prove that cannabis is one of the best usable plants," Cermak said.

The organisers hope that the draft amendment to the penal code, now discussed in the lower house, will change the state's approach to various drugs. They say the new bill should distinguish between cannabis and hard drugs, and abolish the punishments for people growing and keeping marijuana for their own need.

"I think it is the question of time for the [current strict] law to be changed, as the cannabis use rate is huge," said Cermak.
