Worldwide, the movement to legalize marijuana was gaining momentum, with some countries and US states fully allowing sale and use. But in the Czech Republic and much of Europe it is still not fully legal. Possession of a small amount in the Czech Republic has been decriminalized, but that is not the same thing.

Supporters of legalization will be staging the 18th annual Million Marijuana March on May 8, starting at Karlově náměstí at 12:30 p.m. and ending with a happening at Å tvaniceIsland, which is a change from recent marches, which went to Žižkov. Organizers stress that is a peaceful march. And as with all legally permitted demonstrations, it will have a police escort in front and back.

The main concept of the demonstration is to advocate for the legal cultivation and possession of cannabis and cannabis products for their personal use, both for medical treatment and for recreational purposes, the organizers state.

"We cannot continue to tolerate that our government ignores the fact that the prohibition has proven to do more harm than good. It promotes a black market and criminal groups, and offers nothing more than an efficient tool for police to harass decent people," Robert Veverka, head of the group Legalizace.cz, said in a press release.

"Cultivation, possession and use of cannabis for personal use is not the crime. The crime is the unwillingness of the government to legalize cannabis. Intelligent regulations would ensure the full accessibility and usability of cannabis and end unnecessary expenditure on enforcement of prohibition laws. Hemp would be a marketable commodity that would help alleviate many revenue shortfalls in the state treasury," he said, adding that significant progress has been made in other countries already.
