Massachusetts: Marijuana Farm, Dispensary Hoping To Open Soon

Selectmen made it official last night, voting unanimously not to oppose the siting a medical marijuana cultivation and dispensing facility on the outskirts of town, just off Interstate 95.

Selectmen debated the establishment of the entity at 401 East Main St. (Route 133) in response to a request by Health Pharms, Inc, one of 15 medical marijuana dispensaries provisionally registered and OKed to do business in Massachusetts by the state Department of Public Health. The location is within the area outlined by Georgetown's approved medical marijuana zoning bylaw to host such facilities.

The vote Monday night came after an emotional meeting, when a number of local residents encouraged the five-member Board of Selectmen not to reject Healthy Pharms' proposal. The family and friends of two local children, whose severe seizure disorders would benefit from the therapeutic use of medical marijuana, appealed to selectmen to allow the business in town.

A number of the selectmen said the need to help patients and residents was one of their primary reasons for moving the project forward. No one at the meeting spoke against the proposal.

In 2013, Healthy Pharms applied to site on Hale Street in Haverhill, but ran into controversy. When Haverhill designated its medical marijuana zone in a part of town not acceptable to the company, its officials began evaluating their options in other communities, according to Healthy Pharms' attorney Valerio Romano.

At last night's meeting, Romano told Georgetown officials the company has "no intention of siting in Haverhill." He said the company's representatives will meet with state officials soon to file its "change of location" request with the Department of Public Health. The alteration to its original application will cost about $10,000, in addition to its original $30,000 application fee.
