Some are calling his methods controversial, but Dennis Meehan says the community is reaping high rewards. Literally.

Meehan discussed the success of a recent social media campaign in which he promised free cannabis to anyone 21 and over who donated their time to a community cleanup project over the weekend.

Meehan and his wife are caregivers and owners of the Summit Medical Marijuana shop in Gardiner.

On Monday, he posted on the company's Facebook page promising up to 2 grams of free cannabis for filling up trash bags with garbage collected around the city Saturday.

He says by Friday the post had been shared hundreds of times and had tens of thousands of views.

Meehan says he never imagined how far the post would reach and even worried about being to supply the demand.

"The night before I was up all night putting together the bags. I hardly slept. We had people not just from Gardiner, but as far away as Bangor, Waterville, and across Southern Maine. It was incredible," Meehan said.

"Gifting" and possession of marijuana is currently legal in Maine, while moratoriums remain in place for marijuana sales.

Meehan says the weekend project was widely successful in filling and collecting more than 100 over-sized trash bags during the citywide cleanup effort resulting in hundreds of dollars of donated cannabis.

Meehan said he didn't track the exact amount of product donated because his initiative was never about money.

"Gifting marijuana is something my family has been doing for years as caregivers. A big part of Maine's marijuana program is making medicine available to people who otherwise may not have been able to afford it," Meehan said.

"At the end of the day it isn't about money. It's about the need. It's about the community."
