Members of the medical marijuana community invited central Mainers to learn about cannabis, Wednesday night.

The event was hosted by Wellness Connection of Maine, the state's largest dispensary.

Their executive clinical director, along with an osteopathic physician, spoke with the small crowd inside the Buker Community Center.

Guests had the chance to anonymously ask about the benefits of medical marijuana.

They believe it's a safe alternative to many prescription drugs.

It's their hope that recently introduced legislation can help serve those suffering from physical and mental illnesses.

"We have seen in the past many patients come in who have a previously qualified condition and they also have PTS but they could not get the recommendation just for the PTS and so that change in going to happen on October 9th," said Becky, DeKeuster, Clinical Director for Wellness Connection of Maine.

Dustin Sulak, an osteopathic physician, said, "It also has shown in research that it can enhance the effectiveness of therapies that help extinguish the fear from these patients. So it can be a nice edge on to things like psychotherapy or cognitive behavior therapy."
