Medical Marijuana Clinic Applies For Permit In Rancho Vistoso Community

Oro Valley could soon be home to the region's newest Medical Marijuana clinic.

Town officials say it is expected to be located in the Safeway shopping center in the Rancho Vistoso community, near Tangerine.

The business name on the permit is listed as Catalina Hills Botanical Care Medical Marijuana Dispensary.

Oro Valley town officials said the permit was currently under review. The business would already meets zoning requirements, and would have to meet building and state health department requirements before they got the green light to open.

Many Rancho Vistoso residents are concerned about the new business, saying it does not seem to be the right location for such a venture.

The business is located in a shopping center anchored by the Safeway grocery store. Other businesses in the shopping center included restaurants, a nail and tanning spa, a fitness center, and the Lab Corp. drug testing center.

"This is not a good location for it. This is a family area here. we'd like to make sure it stays that way," said concerned resident Bruce Rivera.

Patient advocates said it was the perfect location. Many Oro Valley medical marijuana card holders needed a business close to them to get their medication.

"These are your neighbors. They're not scary boogeymen. They're patients so if people could just keep that in mind," said Kimberly Haslett, a medical marijuana patient advocate.

Oro Valley police met with neighborhood representatives to answer questions earlier in the week. Police say since there are now three dispensaries already open for business in Tucson, this means card holders who have the permission to cultivate marijuana in their homes will no longer be able to do so after their cards expire, as they fall within the 25 mile radius rule.

Rivera felt medical marijuana should be dispensed away from neighborhoods in a more controlled environment.

"I think because it is a medicine it should go in a hospital or in a pharmacy," said Rivera.

We were unable to get ahold of the dispensary applicants for a comment.
