Medical marijuana debate heating up in Mass

As Election Day approaches, the debate is heating up about some of the questions on this year's ballots.

Among them is Question Three in Massachusetts, concerning the medical use of marijuana.

On the steps of the Massachusetts State House, a group of law enforcement, addiction experts, doctors and lawmakers stood in opposition to Question Three, which would permit the medical use of marijuana.

If voters approve the question, criminal and civil penalties for medicinal marijuana would be eliminated for those with debilitating medical conditions, such as cancer, glaucoma or HIV.

Peter Hayashi suffers from severe nerve pain and says smoking marijuana helps ease his discomfort.

Opponents of Question Three say this is not about compassion for people who are suffering; rather, it's about poorly written legislation that creates 35 so-called treatment centers, empowered to dispense marijuana, despite having very little oversight. And that is not to mention the worries about increased addiction, especially among young people.

Supporters of Question Three dismiss claims of increases addiction and crime, saying Massachusetts decriminalized pot a couple of years ago without any trouble.
