Michigan - Davison's first medical marijuana facility has opened to offer advice on cultivation, gather interest on potential educational classes, but Sweet Relief is still holding off on patient-to-caregiver consultations. "No. Not until we hear word from local (officials) that they are okay with us doing that inside the building," said Tom Smith, caregiver at Sweet Relief, situated inside the former Davison Chamber of Commerce site off State Road.
The facility delayed its grand opening last week after some concern was raised by officials in regards to potential handling of marijuana. The city allowed its moratorium on medical marijuana facilities to lapse in September 2013, opting to follow state and federal guidelines. "We want to be very open with the community on what's going on and don't want anyone to be afraid of what we're doing here," said Smith, who said they have not yet received an answer from city officials on the caregiver-patient issue, but they are moving forward on figuring out potential classes that could begin in as soon as three weeks.
"You could go broad with just intro to basic horticulture, but those can get very in depth more in line with genetics, crossing plants, cloning, the science of plants," he said, while other classes may include caregiver services, first aid to ensure patient safety, and the history of cannabis. Smaller classes could be held in the office, Smith said, while the facility would have to find larger spaces to hold classes that became more popular.
Since there is no medicine on the grounds, Smith said any person of age may enter the facility to seek advice between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. "I'm paying rent on the building... I've got to use it," he said. "We like Davison. It's a nice little town. We can go on doing business here and not cause a stir."
