Medical Marijuana Numbers Rising

Oregon's Medical Marijuana Program has more than 55,000 people enrolled and about one fifth of them are concentrated in Southern Oregon.

Southern Oregon cannabis community center closes early on Wednesday. But officials say when it's open, more and more people have been walking in wanting to know more or to sign up for the program.

Here's the mathematical breakdown: there are about 55,000 cardholders in the state; that's about 1.68% of the population. If you combine Jackson and Josephine Counties, there are about 11,000 people with cards, or 3.78%, more than double the statewide rate.

Why so high in Southern Oregon? Advocates say a big portion of it is the climate. Southern Oregon is the top of what's called the emerald triangle; it's an area where the weather and terrain are ideal for growing marijuana.
Local medical offices that help people obtain their cards say there's been a dramatic increase of people interested in the past few years and doctors that operate across Oregon, say the Rogue Valley is much more understanding and accommodating than other areas, like eastern Oregon.

Jackson and Josephine counties don't have the highest total number of cardholders, but when you break it down per capita, the two have the highest percentages. All of these statistics are broken down by county, and by patient's conditions.
